| Dolly wrote “If You Hadn’t Been There” for Carl, her life partner. Carl had died the week before she wrote it in 2025. It is an incredible tribute. A tribute we are each fortunate to attribute to someone in our lives. I encourage you to enter the valley, inhale deeply and recognize who this is in your life. Whose commitment and love propelled you to who you are today? My heart and head go straight to Michael Hopper. When I was ready to quit my doctorate program, worn down and hard-pressed, Mike was the single voice that stood by me. The poor man re-formatted the manuscript ad nauseam. He knew how important the milestone was for me. This is only one example of Mike’s commitment to who I am. I count my blessings to have others who have shown up exactly when I needed them; my children, dear friends, family. I am rich beyond measure and very grateful. Dolly wrote this tribute out of grief. As Carl’s care partner she had given much but she gave it out of the excess she had been gifted. From humble beginnings, she used grit and resilience to navigate barriers few did.As I meet our care community members, I see just such love and such grit. It is an incredible thing to witness and an honor to be included. Dolly made an impact like few have. She reached across division, navigated barriers many could not. Allow her voice and message to buoy you through the waves of love and loss. |
