Dr. Cate, Dementia Coach
Welcome to Dr. Cate’s unschool. Training and education that you choose from your spot of comfort as you navigate life with brain change. Unschooling allows the “student” to let curiosity and interest drive their learning. Dementia education comes in many forms, our goal has been to offer affordable information focused on quality of life regardless of brain change.
Our premiere series focuses on the five strategies for Creating a Thriving Environment (CATE™). Brain change can feel a lot like you are David facing Goliath–a shepherd facing a giant warrior. Our goal is to not simply survive the diagnosis, but to thrive.
Others had tried to fight the giant, but none had succeeded. David tried to wear the traditional armor, but he could not carry it. It was too heavy for a shepherd. Traditional strategies for care are insufficient. The changes from dementia can feel overwhelming.
Creating a Thriving Environment™ has been designed to equip you with new strategies to deal with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Like David, you will have five strategies, five stones. You, like David, may only need to use one strategy to effectively partner with the individual. Of five stones, David only used one to slay Goliath. But he had all five at the ready. We encourage you to look over the video choices, choose your time and topic by clicking the link.
Once you purchase a video, you will be sent an accompanying reflection sheet to apply the strategy.
If you want to purchase the videos for corporate or agency training, special packages are available. CATE certification is available for anyone taking all five trainings and completing the pre and post-assessment.

Measure – One of the most notable things about Goliath was his size, the weight of his armor and how many warriors he had beaten . . In a dementia diagnosis, measuring matters. In this session you will learn how to measure the individual’s processing abilities, the environment and their unmet needs. Knowing the measurements is a great first step to creating a thriving environment for both care partners.
Simplify – Meeting the individual’s strengths requires our adaptation. Simplify looks at researched methods to optimize life with your care partner through preparation and adaptation.
Validate – Who does not thrive on validation? But validating through the brain change can be challenging. One of the strongest strategies in the CATE™ tool pouch, validation examines the strategies promoted by Naomi Feil in partnering for thriving.
Personalize – Relationships are built on identity and preference. Knowing the individual’s history, biography and personal preferences gives you a foundation to go beyond the static of brain change to mutual engagement.
Sensualize – How can we create a thriving environment when the things that were once enjoyed are no longer? We use the senses, all six of them. Investigate the sensory changes of dementia as well as how to adapt our approach regardless of abilities.
